Much of the fun of a charter happens in the water. Boats offer very different equipment: from simple snorkelling kits to the most high-tech toys. Here is a guide to water toys on board and what to ask before booking.
The tender: the most important vehicle
The tender is the small service boat that accompanies the yacht. It is used to go ashore, reach beaches accessible only from the sea, or go to dinner at a harbourside restaurant. On many boats it is also used for water-skiing or towing inflatables. It is usually driven by a crew member.
SUP and kayak
Stand-up paddleboards and kayaks are among the most popular toys: quiet, suitable for everyone, perfect for exploring a cliff early in the morning. Many boats carry them; if not, they can often be added.
Snorkelling
Masks, snorkels and fins are the basic kit. If you have children, ask for small sizes. In marine protected areas, snorkelling is one of the best, and most respectful, ways to enjoy the sea.
Seabob and underwater scooters
A Seabob is an electric water scooter that pulls the swimmer along on the surface or just below. It is quiet, easy to use and great fun. It is found mostly on larger yachts, or can be hired as an extra.
Jet skis
Some yachts carry jet skis on board. Their use is subject to specific rules that vary from country to country: specific licences may be required and there are areas where they are prohibited or restricted. Before counting on this toy, we check together what is possible at your destination.
Inflatables and platforms
Towed rings, slides from the deck, floating platforms: they are children’s favourites, and not only theirs. They are more common on large boats.
What is and is not included
Every boat has its own equipment, listed in its description. Some toys are included, others are charged separately; fuel for the tender and jet skis is usually part of on-board expenses. We talk about it in what is included in the price of a charter.
Safety and respect for the sea
- The crew explains how to use each toy before handing it over.
- Near the coast and swimmers you go slowly, and in some areas motorised craft are not allowed.
- Special rules apply in protected areas: we explain them in how to enjoy a charter while respecting the sea.
Frequently asked questions
Can I ask for a toy the boat does not have?
Often, yes: some toys can be hired and brought on board for the week. Ask in your request.
Are they suitable for children?
SUP, kayak and snorkelling yes, always with a life jacket and an adult nearby. Read our guide to chartering with children too.
