Chartering with children: how to plan a family boat holiday

A week on a boat with children can become the best memory of the summer. It just needs to be planned around their rhythms: fewer miles, more swims and a little extra attention to safety. Here is how to plan a charter with children.

Choosing the boat

For families a catamaran is often the most comfortable choice: it is stable, with large deck spaces and separate cabins. A motor yacht with a good swim platform also works well, because it makes swimming and climbing back aboard easy. We talk about it in which boat to choose.

Safety on board

  • Life jackets in the right size: ask in advance, stating the children’s age and weight.
  • Netting or guards on the guardrails, available on request on some boats.
  • Clear rules from day one: no running on deck, life jacket on during tender trips.

On the first day the captain explains the rules on board to everyone: involving the children makes them more careful and proud.

Cabins and spaces

Consider whether the little ones will sleep with you or in a nearby cabin. An extra bathroom makes mornings much easier. Remember to mention any cots or high chairs you need.

The rhythm of the day

Children enjoy the boat more with short passages, preferably in the morning, and long stops in bays. The afternoon is time for water games; in the evening, an early dinner on board. The captain chooses sheltered anchorages, with shallow, clear water close to the shore.

Activities the little ones love

  • Snorkelling close to shore, with masks in their size.
  • Tender trips to beaches reachable only from the sea.
  • Line fishing with the deckhand, where permitted.
  • Inflatables and SUP, when available on the boat: you will find some ideas in the article on water toys on board.

Eating on board

Let us know the children’s tastes, intolerances and mealtimes before embarkation. With a private chef on board you can have different menus for adults and children, with no complications.

Stress-free arrivals and departures

With children and luggage, a chauffeur transfer from the airport to the port makes all the difference. On request we also arrange child seats.

Frequently asked questions

From what age can children go on a charter?

There is no fixed minimum age: many families set off with young children too. What matters is choosing the right boat and itinerary.

Is a babysitter needed on board?

It is not compulsory. If you would like one, we can look into additional staff: ask in your request.
