People who choose a holiday on a boat do it for the sea. Protecting it is the best way to find it just as beautiful next time. Here is how to enjoy a sustainable charter, with simple gestures that make a difference.
Anchoring without damaging posidonia
Posidonia is a marine plant that forms meadows on the Mediterranean seabed: it oxygenates the water, shelters fish and protects beaches from erosion. Anchors can tear it up. That is why in many parts of the Mediterranean anchoring on posidonia is prohibited or restricted, and mooring buoys or sandy seabeds are used instead. The captain knows the rules of each area and chooses where to anchor.
Marine protected areas
In Italy, marine protected areas are often divided into zones with different rules: in some, navigation and anchoring are prohibited; in others they are allowed with speed limits or only on buoys. They are also the best places for snorkelling. We talk about this, for example, in our guide to the La Maddalena Archipelago.
Less plastic on board
- Reusable bottles and filtered water instead of small bottles, when the boat allows it.
- Provisions with less packaging: you can say so in the preference sheet.
- Rubbish always kept on board until port, sorted for recycling.
Sunscreens and body products
Some substances in sunscreens can harm the marine ecosystem. Choose products formulated to be kinder to the sea and, when you can, protect yourself with light clothing and a hat. Biodegradable shampoos and soaps help too.
Fresh water and energy
On board, fresh water is produced by the watermaker or loaded in port: using it carefully reduces consumption and stops. Switching off lights and air conditioning when not needed reduces use of the generator.
Sail at a gentle pace
A lower cruising speed uses less fuel and makes sailing more pleasant. An itinerary with fewer passages and more stops is also more sustainable. On some sailing yachts and catamarans you sail under canvas when the wind allows: read which boat to choose.
Respect the wildlife
If you meet dolphins or turtles, slow down and keep your distance, without chasing them. Do not collect shells, starfish or sea urchins.
