On a boat you live with little, and that little must be the right things. Wardrobe space is limited, the sun is strong and in the evening, at anchor, a little wind can get up. Here is what to pack for a week on a crewed charter.
Luggage: soft, not hard
The first rule is the bag itself. Hard suitcases are difficult to stow in a cabin; a soft bag folds up and disappears into a locker. If you arrive with more luggage, ask in advance: sometimes the crew can store some in a dedicated space.
Daytime clothes
- Two or three swimsuits, so there is always a dry one.
- Light cotton or linen T-shirts and shirts.
- Shorts and a cover-up for going ashore.
- A light long-sleeved shirt: it protects from the sun better than any cream.
Evening clothes
Even in summer, at anchor, evenings can be cool. Bring a sweatshirt or a light jumper and a pair of long trousers. For a dinner at a restaurant ashore, one smart but comfortable outfit is enough: on a boat the style is relaxed.
Shoes: fewer than you think
On board you go barefoot: street shoes can damage the teak deck and are usually left at the entrance. A pair of sandals or deck shoes with light-coloured soles is enough, plus a pair of shoes for the evening ashore.
Sun protection
- High-factor sunscreen, preferably reef-friendly.
- Sunglasses, ideally polarised.
- A hat that will not blow away in the wind.
- After-sun or a moisturising cream.
A small personal first-aid kit
The medicines you normally use, something for seasickness if you suffer from it, plasters and a mosquito repellent for evenings in port. If seasickness worries you, read our tips on how to prevent it too.
Documents and technology
- ID card or passport, especially if the itinerary visits another country.
- A waterproof phone case.
- Chargers and an adapter, if the boat has different sockets from yours.
What you do not need to bring
Beach towels and linen are usually on board. Snorkelling gear is often available too: check the boat’s details or ask us. Leave at home valuables you do not need and too many changes of clothes.
Frequently asked questions
Can I bring my own wine or special products?
Generally, yes. If you have preferences, mention them before departure: the crew can also stock the provisions for you, and a sommelier can choose the wines together with the chef.
Do I need formal wear?
Only if you have a special evening ashore planned. On board the style is always informal.
