The first crewed charter always has something new about it: a home that moves, a crew that takes care of everything, a programme that changes with the wind. To really enjoy it, it pays to arrive prepared. Here are ten things to know before you step aboard.
1. Choose the boat according to how you want to spend your holiday
Motor yacht, catamaran or sailing yacht is not just a matter of taste. A motor yacht covers more miles in less time, a catamaran offers space and stability, a sailing yacht gives silence and a slower pace. If in doubt, read our guide catamaran, sailing yacht or motor yacht.
2. Count cabins, not just berths
A boat may list more berths than are comfortable for a week. Think about who sleeps with whom, how many bathrooms you need and whether there are children. Better one cabin too many than a cramped holiday.
3. The crew is part of the experience
Captain, deckhand, stewardess, chef: each has a precise role. The captain makes the safety decisions and knows the best bays, the stewardess looks after life on board, the chef cooks to order. If food matters, consider a private chef on board from the start.
4. Read the quote carefully
The charter price generally covers the boat and crew. Fuel, harbours, food and drinks are often extra and managed with an expenses fund. You will find everything explained item by item in what is and is not included in the price.
5. Book early, especially in high season
July and August fill up quickly, as do the weeks of major events. Moving early means more boats to choose from. For details read when to book a summer charter.
6. Bring a soft bag
On board, space is designed to be used to the last centimetre: hard suitcases are difficult to stow. Soft bags, few shoes and light clothes are best. Street shoes are left ashore or in a basket at the entrance.
7. The weather decides the itinerary
The itinerary is a proposal, not a contract. If the wind changes, the captain chooses the most sheltered anchorage. That is often exactly how you discover the most beautiful bays.
8. Share your tastes before departure
Allergies, favourite foods, wines, timings, activities: the more information you give the crew, the more tailor-made the week will be. Usually a short questionnaire is filled in before embarkation.
9. Organise your arrival and departure
The charter begins when you arrive on the quay relaxed. A chauffeur transfer from the airport, or a private jet flight, avoids waiting and tight connections.
10. Leave room for free time
The temptation is to fill every day. But the beauty of a charter is also stopping: a morning swim, a long lunch at anchor, a sunset with no plans.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a boating licence for a crewed charter?
No. On a crewed charter the boat is skippered by the captain: you are a guest.
Can I change the itinerary during the week?
Yes, within the limits of weather, distances and local rules. Discuss it with the captain, who will suggest the best alternatives.
How early do I need to arrive for embarkation?
It depends on the time stated in the contract. We will tell you the exact time and, if needed, organise the transfer.
